It has grown easier to know when Revan is about to leave again. He grows quieter in the days prior and stares into the distance, vacant expression in place, as though he was looking at something that no one else could see.
Kira catches him like that one day on the small balcony of their sometimes apartment at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. His hands grip the railing and he stares off into the horizon and she watches him, saying nothing, while night falls and the air grows cooler, leaving goose bumps across their skin.
He hasn't moved for an hour, hasn't acknowledged her presence, when she finally gives up and disappears back into their apartment to join Ellia, Kaelyn, and Mana. It's another two before he wanders back in, the twins long since put to bed. His shoulders seem slumped, far too much weight bearing down on them now, as he comes in and crosses the small quarters.
He pauses where Kira sits on the settee, a datapad in her lap, and he places a hand on her shoulder, squeezing, for a brief second before continuing his journey. He stops at the girls' room and from outside the door Kira can hear him holding a whispered, one-ended conversation as Ellia and Kaelyn sleep. It's full of choked apologies and pleadings for forgiveness at always leaving, for not being there, and Kira almost steps in. But he's out within a minute, pausing when he sees her lingering at the door.
She opens her mouth to speak, but he cuts her off with a kiss and swallows her words, her reassurances. He's there, his mind on nothing else but her, when they make love that night, slow and delicate, and it's how she knows that when she wakes up in the morning that he'll be long gone.
