Revan paused in the hall, turning an ear toward his daughter’s room as he heard crying in the room beyond. He had never made it a habit to listen to the conversations his daughters had, but this was different.

"I take it that it didn't go well?"

That was Ellia, not the one crying then, and Revan moved closer to the hall, pressing against the wall. He'd been concealed in the Force since coming home, too tired to deal with anyone and had hid in the Hawk for an hour or so, and surely neither Kaelyn nor Ellia would hear him now.

"No," Kaelyn murmured from inside the room, her voice shaking with sobs. "They wanted nothing to do with me."

Revan frowned, resisting the urge to interrupt the conversation then and demand who they were and why they made his daughter cry.

"Well, they're stupid then. Forget 'em," he heard Ellia say, but that only made Kaelyn cry harder. "C'mon Kae, we've got nothing to be ashamed about."

"But doesn't it ever bother you, El?"

"No," Ellia was quick to respond and Revan could just imagine her shaking his head.

"They're not trusted, El. I mean, Dad tried to take over the kriffing galaxy, Mom destroyed a planet, and we're being punished for it! We're not trustworthy because of them."

Revan felt his heart lurch. So that was what this was about.

"That's not true and you know it, Kaelyn. They both saved the galaxy too and Mom still works with the Jedi and Dad... I think he works with Republic still. I know he doesn't say much about what he does, but that's what I think," Ellia said fiercely.

It was quiet for a long time before Kaelyn spoke again. "You're right, I know," and Revan was relieved. He didn't know how he'd handle it if Kaelyn had really thought that way. "I'm just..."

"You're upset because some snobs said you couldn't hang out with them."

"They're not snobs..."

"They are!"

Silence again and then, "All right, maybe they are."

"That's right, they are. So, it doesn't matter what they think and besides…” Ellia lowered her voice and Revan had to strain to hear what she said, "Cole still likes you, no matter who your family is."

Boys, Revan thought with a groan. They couldn't just leave his daughters alone and this Cole one was the worst yet. He turned his attention back to the conversation in the room, only to find it had stopped. It was a second later that he realized why: he had groaned out loud. And there was Kaelyn, eyes red-rimmed, and Ellia standing in the hall, looking at him with identical scowls.

There was only one thing he could do.

He took off in the other direction.
